2025 Theme:
Language Shapes Leaders
Each year, JNCL-NCLIS brings together language educators and other stakeholders from across the U.S. to share experiences, issues, and strategies and to convey our priorities and requests for legislation to members of Congress. After several years of conducting Language Advocacy Days virtually, this year the event was once again in person in Washington, D.C.
LAD 2025 was my third year participating in this national advocacy event but my first year in person. This was also my first year leading the state delegation for Michigan. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to learn from the very experienced and well-informed Dr. Julie Foss, the Public Affairs representative for MIWLA and a professor of French at Saginaw Valley State University.
The Joint National Committee for Languages – National Council for Language and International Studies (JNCL-NCLIS) informs language educators about ongoing policy and legislation relevant to world languages, ESL, and multilingualism. JNCL hosts multiple events each year in which language educators meet with the offices of Senators and Representatives.

On this page, I have shared images and retrospective notes from the event, the “one-pager” on Michigan that we took into legislative offices along with the extensive materials curated by JNCL-NCLIS, and an extensive collection of related resources that I put together for our team and other participants.
